Cegelec, an international group providing technological services to companies and local authorities, has been selected by the Moroccan National Electricity Board (ONE) for the construction of two new hydroelectric power stations close to Khenifra in the Middle Atlas.
Under the leadership of Va Tech Escher Wyss GmbH, which will supply the turbines, and in partnership with Koncar GIM, in charge of the alternators, Cegelec has been entrusted with the general technical coordination of the electromechanical section of the new power plants in Tanafnit (2 x 9.3 MW) and El Borj (2 x 11.7 MW). Cegelec will also provide electrical and mechanical lots, the control command system, the 60kV evacuation unit, and secondary civil engineering works.
Contracts represent a total value exceeding 20 million euros for the entire grouping, including more than 12 million euros for Cegelec. The two plants are due to be operational for the first half of 2008.
The hydroelectric units at Tanafnit and El Borj are part of ONE's electricity production equipment development programme to meet the country's growing demand for energy (+7% in 2004). They are also part of the ONE's drive to give priority to sources of renewable energy.
Both contracts are an additional success story for the Cegelec Energy Division. This division provides services for turnkey medium-rated electric power plants based on hydraulics, thermal power or wind turbines. According to Jean-Marc Perraud, Cegelec Vice President, "both contracts are the result of teamwork by the entire grouping".
Cegelec Morocco , the Group's largest subsidiary outside Europe , has been a long-term partner to ONE. It is particularly involved in ONE's major rural general electrification programme, for which it has constructed the electrical infrastructures in more than 4,000 villages so far.
