Renovation of the Mont-Blanc tunnel between France and Italy

The tunnel under the Mont Blanc between France and Italy, which was totally destroyed by fire on 24 March 1999, has been thoroughly overhauled with a Cegelec-installed supervisory control and data acquisition integration (SCADA) system that is unique in Europe. Designed to manage and control all of the tunnel’s electro-mechanical equipment, the system seamlessly integrates the system’s 28,000 data acquisition devices and PLCs into a centralised utilities management system that monitors the site in real time. This provides operators with a complete picture of the tunnel ecosystem, enabling them to manage it holistically rather than just reacting to a complex series of discrete events.

In another European premier, Cegelec has implemented an integrated operational support system (OSS) that, in a given situation, isolates critical information and recommends appropriate actions for the operator. The OSS also delivers innovative ventilation control with, for the first time, fully automated regulation of longitudinal air speed.
