France, Sarthe Conseil général: Public high-speed network

The Sarthe Conseil général public authority decided in October 2004 to install a « neutral » and permanent public network accessible to all operators and Internet access providers, guaranteeing a 100% high-speed coverage of the region by 2006. This vast network combines several technologies (optical fibre, xDSL, radio-relay systems and WiMax), was awarded to one single entity, Sagem - Cegelec Ouest.
The goal of this network is to create a tight and balanced (same services and same tariffs for all) grid reaching up to the smallest villages in the countryside The network will guarantee a minimum 2 Mbits/s flow on the whole network and over 10 Mbits/s in the busiest regions.
