Future seat of the Council of the European Union in Brussels

Cegelec will be in charge of all electrical and HVAC infrastructure installation at the new seat of the Council of the European Union and the Council of Europe.

The construction and renovation contract was awarded last summer by Regie der Gebouwen, the Belgian National Buildings Agency, to a joint venture comprising Interbuild and Cegelec. The contract is worth a total of €180 million, of which €47 million for Cegelec, with work scheduled for completion in late 2013.

The project, designed by the Belgian architecture firm Philippe Samyn & Partners, consists of approximately 45,000 square metres of office space and 15,000 square metres of basement.

The new building comprises a large glass cube with a spherical section, which will house the conference rooms and media facilities. The cube will be connected to Block A of the Résidence Palace, built in the 1920s. Located in the heart of Brussels’ European quarter, the building features Art Deco-style facades, entrances and ground floor corridors.

Leveraging its vast technical expertise to meet the client’s demanding energy management requirements, Cegelec will install a cogeneration system and photovoltaic solar panels to provide some of the building’s electricity, deploy chilled ceilings and a sophisticated air handling system and install security, fire detection and access control equipment.
